Is it necessary to have prior experience in the Medical Coding field to be hired by an employer?

I'm thinking about taking a Medical Billing and Coding Review Class to help me prep to get CPC certified. If after I'm certified is it absolutely necessary to get an externship/have prior experience in order to get employed as a Medical Coder?
